New airshow lands seasoned commentators

Published: 23 Jun 2017

Organisers of one of Lincolnshire's most eagerly anticipated new events have bagged two familiar voices from the aviation scene to welcome spectators and guide them through the jam-packed programme of the inaugural Scampton Airshow.

Ben Dunnell and his right-hand-man, George Bacon, will be continuing their long-standing airshow commentary relationship in September at the Lincolnshire-based show. The pair are both hugely experienced airshow commentators and their commentaries provide both an entertaining and informative accompaniment to the action taking place in the air and on the ground.

Ben, 38, began his career as an aviation journalist and is currently the editor of Aeroplane magazine and deputy editor of Combat Aircraft Monthly. He began his airshow commentary career in 2009 at the world's biggest military airshow - the Royal International Air Tattoo - where he is now the senior commentator.

Over the years Ben has also voiced the IWM Duxford airshows, RNAS Yeovilton, the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden and the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune. He said: "I'm delighted to be on the team for the first Scampton Airshow - it's always great to be in at the start of something new. The combination of an historic RAF station in the Service's Lincolnshire heartland and an impressive flying programme will doubtless make for a highly successful and enjoyable weekend."

Following a successful military career, during which he accumulated nearly 4,000 flying hours, George initially pursued a passion for broadcasting as a freelance presenter with the BBC and British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS). Still a regular music presenter on BFBS and a major event commentator, George's aviation commentary experience took off when managing both the Army's Blue Eagles Helicopter Display Team and the Army Historic Flight, which he still manages and flies with today.

He said: "My first choice of career was broadcasting which I dropped when selected for RAF pilot training. I was delighted to accept the invitation to commentate at Scampton Airshow - especially as I will be working alongside Ben whom I have worked with at the Air Tattoo for a number of years."

The Scampton Airshow, staged in aid of the RAF Charitable Trust, will be held at RAF Scampton - the Lincolnshire home of the Red Arrows - from September 9-10. The diverse, family-friendly event will encompass an impressive five-hour flying display, complemented by an array of entertainment on the ground, from a nostalgic Vintage Village through to interactive and engaging STEM exhibits in the Techno Zone.

Tickets for the Scampton Airshow are priced at £39 and must be bought online in advance. Inspiring the next generation of aviation enthusiasts, tickets for under 16s are free with a ticket holding adult.
